About This Golf Course

The Course

Adjoined to Southampton’s Ageas Bowl and one of the newest golf courses in the UK, Boundary Lakes bears a lot of weight on its shoulders. The golf courses 18 holes wind around the surrounding grounds of the stadium which provides an exciting backdrop to the opening and finishing holes. The round starts with a sharp dogleg fairway guarded by a large lake which it shares with the 2nd and 18th holes, coupled with the stylish Hilton hotel in the background, these three holes are the center piece of the course. Once you come away from the opening two, short but tricky holes, the course starts to open up into the landscape.

With 7 par 3’s, a total yardage of just under 6000 and a course par of 69, on paper it would be easy to assume that Boundary Lakes won’t pack much of a punch but the extremely well crafted holes and fantastic use of the small land the golf course sits in will give any other championship course a run for its money in terms of enjoyability. Take for instance the Par 3, 11th which is no more than 110 yards from the tee box to the center of the green, but the devious gorge in-between the tees and green and guarding green side bunkers make it less than easy. Then you have the Par 4, 14th which greets you with one of the narrowest tee shots you are likely to come across as majestic, tall pines line the entire length of the tee box.

Great elevation changes and sloping fairways give you a chance to pull the longer clubs out the bag on the back 9. Blind tee shots, small target greens and ever undulating fairways are consistent throughout the round.

Being so new, the golf course still has a bit of growing in to do but once it’s there it is sure to be one of the best in the area. The greens already look outstanding, the fairways are tidy and fantastically designed and the lakes are all decorated beautifully with stone. Away from the opening holes, the landscape that frames each hole appears seemingly untouched with dense wooded areas and plenty of trees awaiting any wayward shot or miscalculated approaches to the greens.

The Clubhouse

Whilst Boundary Lakes doesn’t currently have a purpose-built clubhouse – this is due later in the year – the golf course belongs to the Hilton hotel so amenities are fantastic as you would expect. Over 170 rooms, 2 restaurants a fitness centre and luxury health spa all belong to the golf course and sit directly on the stadium, many of the rooms even overlook the pitch. The Lakeview Bar overlooks the lake and the 3 holes directly outside the hotel and is best suited as the club restaurant. A nice outdoor terrace provides a good outdoor space for the warmer months.

The pro shop is actually a branch of the popular American Golf chain so the choice of stock and gear is far superior from what any typical pro shops tend to offer. Outsourcing to local golf retailers or national stores like this should definitely be something a lot of other golf clubs should consider.

Final Thoughts

Boundary Lakes is a fantastic golf course with huge amounts of future potential. The whole site, including the Ageas Bowl and the Hilton hotel really feel special and is guaranteed to be a hotspot for corporate days, society groups and visiting golfers. It’s extremely reasonably priced and with the extensive hotel facilities, you could comfortably spend a couple of days here. The Ageas Bowl is also a venue for many major music acts too as well as international and county level cricket so hospitality is their game and they certainly deliver.
