About This Golf Course

The Course

Having been here once before, this place is one I was keen to come back to. Located just above the North East town of Alcudia, Club de Golf Alcanada is up among the best golf courses in Mallorca. Out on the course you will feel like you are playing through the mountains but look back the other way, and you will be met by a stunning view of the Mediterranean ocean and Mallorca’s neighbouring Balearic Island, Menorca. The golf course is well routed into the foots of the hills which naturally adds dimension to the course with its sloping fairways and elevated tees. Each tee box marker is adorned with the club logo as well as the flags and ball washers – that attention to detail is what I love to see.

The Par 5 opener sets the tone for the rest of the 18. On the approach shot, the detail is something that is common throughout the rest of the golf course. Rustic stone blends its self into the landscape, bridges and winding cart paths add to the fun especially when driving. I went round here in the winter months and the condition of the course was still great. The fairways were lush and the tee boxes nicely sculpted into the grass, a few patches on the greens but that just adds fuel to the excuses post round! This is the kind of course you would be happy to play well around but just enjoying the aesthetics is equally rewarding.

The Clubhouse

The clubhouse is just the right amount of luxury without being pretentious. The pro shops high ceilings and exposed traditional Spanish stonework are a treat for the eyes. Through the courtyard you will find some great changing rooms and shower facilities. Further up you will find the restaurant which boasts a large terrace looking out over to Menorca.

The Location

Don’t be put off by Alcanada’s position on the map. It’s only a 45 minute drive from Palma which means you can nip up there for the day and be back in the city in time for dinner (or cervezas). However, if you wish to stay locally then the small harbour town of Alcudia is a lovely little place. Plenty of reasonably priced hotels and tons of restaurants right on the harbour front. Perhaps not as much action as Palma has on offer but you will still inevitably stumble across an Irish Bar if you go looking for one.

Final Thoughts

Alcanada Golf Club is too good to miss if you have plans to golf in Mallorca. Yes there are courses in and around Palma (and some great ones too) but this has something different to what they can offer. Stay locally if you don’t mind a slightly more, lets say civilized nightlife, but otherwise invest an hour each way and play for the day then head back to Palma. Make sure to try the Alcanada Club Sandwich, this thing is somewhat of a legend in my office and one that has earned its self the prestigious #1 spot on my ever-growing list of Club Sandwiches!
